Exploring the Rhone River with Riverside River Cruises

I had the privilege of experiencing the epitome of luxury on a river cruise with Riverside Cruises, journeying along the storied Rhône from Lyon to Avignon in France.

Although Riverside Cruises is a relatively recent addition to the river cruise landscape — having just marked their second anniversary — their roots in hospitality run deep. Theo Gerlach, the visionary owner, leads the esteemed Seaside Collection, a portfolio of more than a dozen opulent hotels across Germany, Spain, and the Maldives. A lifelong affinity for water and ships inspired his family to acquire three vessels from Crystal River Cruises, ushering Riverside into the world of river cruising.

Riverside Cruises exudes refined elegance at every turn. Each suite boasts dedicated butler service, 24-hour room service, and curated small-group excursions, ensuring an experience defined by comfort and exclusivity.

Our adventure began in Lyon, where we arrived two days early to immerse ourselves in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. From the moment Riverside collected us at our hotel and escorted us to the ship, their commitment to impeccable service was evident.

The region’s rich Roman heritage was palpable throughout our journey — visible in the ancient amphitheater perched above Lyon and the impressive Gier Aqueduct. The Rhône River is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts, admirers of Vincent van Gogh, and connoisseurs of fine food and wine.

Among the highlights was our visit to Arles, where Van Gogh resided for two prolific years, producing more than 200 masterpieces. In nearby St-Rémy-de-Provence, we toured the asylum where he found solace and inspiration; standing in his bedroom and wandering through the evocative gardens was truly moving.

The picturesque villages of southern France provided a dreamlike backdrop to our days ashore. After each excursion, returning to the ship felt restorative — every meal was a celebration of flavor, and every request was met with graciousness. Whether indulging in multiple appetizers or requesting smaller portions to savor dessert, I always felt genuinely cared for.

Riverside’s approach to excursions was refreshingly personalized. Guests could choose from guided city walks, immersive tours to enchanting towns such as Gordes, St-Rémy-de-Provence, and L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, or active outings like hiking and cycling complete with scenic picnics.

Aboard the Riverside Ravel, each suite was thoughtfully designed; our Seahorse cabin featured dual sinks and a spacious shower with intuitive controls for instant comfort. The onboard spa offered indulgent massages (though appointments filled quickly), while the well-equipped self-service laundry added a touch of convenience. The sun-drenched top deck became my favorite retreat — with plush loungers, ample seating, and memorable events like a barbecue featuring tomahawk steaks, succulent shrimp, and an array of delectable sides and desserts.

Interestingly, I began this voyage indifferent to wine but gradually developed an appreciation through four expertly guided tastings — including an unforgettable session at Châteauneuf-du-Pape. On our final evening, a signature four-course dinner paired with exquisite wines at Domaine de Panery provided a sublime finale as we watched the sun set over the vineyards.

This river cruise through southern France has transformed my perspective on travel. Though not initially atop my list, this region — and Riverside Cruises’ unmatched luxury — now stand out as one of my most cherished travel experiences.
